Meaning “the unselfish giving of oneself to others,” Altru was founded by Manuela Testolini Nelson, a half-Egyptian, half-Italian, Canadian-raised smartie with a law degree, her own foundation and an estranged husband named Prince. The line was inspired by its creator’s passion for travel, teas and candles, and her own culturally-mixed background; everything from the scents to the packaging were selected by Testolini Nelson to reflect places around the world that she found particularly notable for their beauty and artistry. Pure, globally-sourced ingredients like grapefruit and Italian rosemary (“Remembrance”), white clove and wild ginger (“Wellness“), and Persian lilac and bamboo (“Integrity“) combine to create scents that are distinctive and uplifting, though never heady. Packaged in boxes emblazoned with colorful patterns, the five fragrances are available as interior oil sticks, 11-oz candles (poured into hammered copped pots) and incense; accessories include Egyptian-style scroll incense cases and copper, star-shaped holders.
